BIM in substation engineering and telecom focus in 2022

2022 was a productive year, and we expanded our service offering while continuing to deliver high-quality engineering solutions for our clients. Here are a few highlights and a look at what’s next.
This year, we significantly expanded our services by launching telecom tower and tower foundation design services. This includes preliminary design for multiple telecom tower projects, steel shop drawings, foundation drawings, and risk assessments. We got off to a fast start, delivering designs for around 40 sites in January alone.
Strengthening the power grid
Our substation design team was busy. Together with our key partner Enersense, we started a major project: the design of the new Arkkukallio substation. It’s a large project where we use our BIM-based design approach, and in addition to structural design, the partner’s electrical designers also model the main circuit system. The client, Fingrid, was impressed with this approach, as, to our knowledge, this is the first time a combined model has been used on a substation project of this scale. Our goal is to use augmented reality tools on site to review the model, so construction progress can be compared directly to the BIM model in the same view.
3D/BIM modeling played a central role in many of our substation and transmission line projects. This technology enables better coordination, visualization, and efficiency throughout the design process.
In 2022, we also finalized the plans for the fully 3D-modeled Melamäki wind farm substation. Construction on the Kärppiö substation project progressed rapidly and is nearly complete. We also delivered foundation design for multiple substation and transmission line projects, as well as a third-party design review for a major transmission line in the Aurora line project.
Innovation and teamwork
We developed a new steel rock pillar foundation design for easier construction on islands. Our team also created a parametric Revit model for 110 kV power line towers, further enhancing efficiency in our projects. We're developing a family of foundation designs for 110 kV tubular towers.
Our team grew by one new member at our Kaarina office.
We are starting 2023 with the Simojoki substation design and numerous telecom tower projects, and we are preparing for the Herva-Nuojuankangas 400 kV foundation design.
